Why I Wrote The Golf Lie

If you've been seeing my ads lately, I owe you an explanation.

Why I wrote this book.

I've been coaching golf for 25+ years. I've written plenty of books - more than 35,000 golfers bought Unf*ck Your Golf Swing alone.

So why another one?

Because I couldn't let go of a question.

I'd been circling it since 2004, when I was part of a biomechanical study that contradicted almost everything golf instruction was teaching. But the final piece didn't arrive until last year - and it came from tennis.

Last year I got to do a project with Pat Cash - the 1987 Wimbledon champion. I even got to spend two hours with him on centre court at Kooyong (the home of another of his greatest triumphs). Talk about an amazing experience!

Here's the best bit.

He showed me one of his favourite serving drills - "Toes on the Line."

I loved it instantly because it simplified the serve. I even hit an ace.

The drill didn't teach technique. It removed it. The body organised itself around the task.

So I built a golf version. It worked. Really well and I am still using it today.

But more importantly, it forced me to sharpen everything I believed about the swing.

I'd talked about throwing for years. But something was never quite right, and the drill exposed it. It untangled the confusion between a single-arm throw and what actually happens with two hands on a golf club.

Suddenly, everything got simpler.

For months I tried to break the idea. Every lesson, every practice session, every criticism. I was hunting for the hole in it.

I couldn't find one. Neither could anyone else.

Instead, the model kept shrinking. Cleaner. Simpler. Until all that remained was thirteen words.

Perhaps the simplest swing idea there is - and it applies to every shot in the bag.

I wasn't trying to simplify it. That's just what was left.

And then it hit me. The biggest problem in golf isn't bad swings. It's that golfers have been handed the wrong question - and the industry keeps answering it with more positions, more checkpoints, more noise.

That's the lie. And that's the book.

"I've interviewed and worked with some of the best instructors in the game, taken on different methods for stories - so I've got all sorts of swing theories swimming around in there. I don't like having to think about my swing that much on the course. It's a grind. Just thinking about throwing the clubhead is taking care of a lot of the things I'd been working on - not sliding, not early extending. I feel like I'm playing golf again, not golf swing."

Now let me be straight with you.

You've seen my ads. More than once. You've clicked, you've read, maybe you've watched me talk about this on video.

Something about it caught you. Otherwise you wouldn't be here.

And I know what's happening. You're doing what golfers always do with a new idea - circling it. Waiting for more proof. Wondering if it's just another theory that falls apart on the course.

I get it. You've been burned before. Every "swing fix" you've ever bought promised the same thing.

But here's the difference, and it's the whole point of the book.

I'm not giving you more information. I'm removing what's been getting in the way.

One idea. Thirteen words. Once you see the swing this way, you can't unsee it - and the fixes you've been chasing for years stop being twenty different problems and become one.
